Climate Action North supercharges 'Green June' with events

Community Interest Company, Climate Action North, is supercharging its work by hosting or taking part in a series of events this June focused on tackling the climate and ecological crisis.

The month kicked off with a special two-day online conference sharing hopeful rewilding stories. In celebration of this year’s World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, an online audience enjoyed a wealth of inspirational talks from leading rewilders and seawilders. Sponsored by Rewilding Britain and supported by Northumberland Wildlife Trust, the conference is available to watch on YouTube.

This year’s Great Big Green Week takes place from 8 to 16 June. It’s the UK’s largest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. As part of the week, Climate Action North’s CEO, Sharon Lashley, will attend the premiere of Wilding The Movie from the Knepp Estate at the Tyneside Cinema. Stay tuned for her review.

A greenhouse and garden day will also take place during Great Big Green Week on 14 June at The Marigold Nursing Home in Sunderland. This event is part of the ongoing Rewilding Marigold project to rewild the dementia nursing home’s outdoor space and improve access to nature. Volunteers will build a greenhouse, paint fence panels, and plant trees. Read more about this project  and make a donation if you can.

Other activities during this month of intensive climate action also includes a nature walk at Dalton Park on 22 June to support the Restore Nature Now walk in London. Details to join this event are here

An online Book Wilding session with Chantal Lyons will take place on 27 June, featuring her book Groundbreakers and the Wild Boar. Chantal, a naturalist and writer, will discuss her book, charting a journey about what it might take to coexist with wild boar. Book tickets. All Book Wilding sessions are held in association with Stockton based bookseller Drake the Bookshop.

Swift Awareness Week runs from 29 June to 7 July. During this week, Climate Action North will raise awareness about swifts and recruit business parks to install swift boxes.

Climate Action North’s CEO, Sharon Lashley, said: “This year’s Green June is an exciting time to share practical advice on taking positive action to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis. These crises are among the most critical issues we face today, and it’s imperative we all take practical actions that make a positive difference.”

The time for talking is over, today we need to act.
