Young Women’s Film Academy to premiere documentary on fast fashion impact at Celebration Awards Evening

The Young Women’s Film Academy, an organisation dedicated to empowering girls and young women through the art of filmmaking, is gearing up to host its Celebration Awards Evening on 10 December.

The event will celebrate the creativity, determination, and achievements of the academy's young filmmakers over the past year.

A key highlight of the evening will be the premiere of IMPACT, a short documentary that explores the pressure building on a "brainwashed planet." The film aims to challenge the audience’s perceptions of just how dangerous fast fashion can be and shows the lengths young women will go to change their world for the better.

Clara Shield, Founder and CEO at the Academy, said: “The girls and young women we work with tell us they’re anxious about the world they live in and their future. Through the lens of these young filmmakers, the film shows how the next generation is not only aware of the world’s problems but is actively working to change them.

“This project gave them a safe space to delve into this important issue and produce a film that reflects their perspectives and narratives. It will amplify their voices and, through storytelling, challenge systems of power and oppression.”

17-year-old Eva took part in the project. Eva said: “I think it's especially important to women because men maybe don't have that sort of pressure to conform or to shine in certain areas where it's a big expectation of women. So that's why I think it's important for the Young Women’s Film Academy to talk about it as well.”

The evening will also feature a Q&A panel with the cast and crew of IMPACT and a fashion show organised in collaboration with students from Newcastle College to showcase sustainable fashion.

The night will also include live music, an awards ceremony to honour the achievements of Young Women’s Film Academy members, and a food and drinks reception.

The project is supported by Climate Action North. Sharon Lashley, CEO of Climate Action North, said: “This inspiring project highlights the immense potential of young women to drive change. Young people are at the forefront of the fight against the climate crisis, and it's essential that we all take immediate action to address the situation and prevent further harm to the planet.”

With the focus on sustainability the event will highlight how young women will stop at nothing to change the world they live in through the power of storytelling and collaboration.

It will take place at the Black Swan on Westgate Road in Newcastle and admission is free. Get tickets.
